Nature's Peace

Some deer have been visiting my backyard. Two males and a female. They munch on the apples that are falling from an old apple tree. Unfortunately, today one of them started to nibble at the garden, so I went outside. They moved off and the two males stood off while the female sniffed and came closer, sniffed and came closer, till she was about 10 feet from me. I waved my arms at her then and spoke to her to keep her away from the garden because if she walked up and began to eat, I couldn't very well push her away. Figured it was best to just keep her away to begin with, and I have no doubt she would have continued to approach otherwise. I wish I'd taken the camera out with me but hadn't expected such close contact. Still, I got some pictures the other day on the occasion of their first visit. I also got a picture of a bird's nest in the front yard:

Hraf,

Adorable! :-D Loved the pics. Man, your backyard is like a forest: miles of land!

And the deers and the birds? Well, you are are blessed to have the gentle beauties in your territory.

Isn't speaking to animals and getting them to understand your body language or even just simply befriending them, such a healing experience for the soul?

The backyard extends about 350+ feet (don't know what that is in meters - I'll never go metric) and is long and narrow. It is like a park, with rows of old, stately black walnut trees.

It is wonderful to be able to get that close to a wild animal. The deer are less of a problem than the woodchucks, who have tunnels everywhere, are destructive, and expensive and nearly impossible to get rid of. They also breed and there are at least 2 young ones running around besides the mother.

Bunnies nested in the yard last year but none so far this year.

I looked yesterday and that nest appeared to be empty.

I made a mistake in my first post with the word 'deer', so I reposted it above, with the correction.

The bunnies were adorable little things in their nest, covered with down. The other day I had to slow down (I was going all of 15 mph) in order to let a bunny hop across the street.

Hrafnkell,

You are a heathen with a big heart. May Diana bless you. As you know, she is the goddess of the hunt and the goddess of childbirth.

When Hellenes want to bestow warmth on a kindhearted, animal lover, he or she says ""May Diana bless you"". We truly believe such people are blessed by her.

Thank you, Indrani. It would be a wonderful world if we would hear more Pagan blessings in our lives. For example, "Thor ward you" before someone sets off on a journey (my ancestors, even those half-Christian or nominally Christian, still prayed to Thor before sea voyages since they didn't trust the White Christ knew what he was about on water).

I ran into some people on the Catholic Answers Forum (they have a small area for non-Catholics) who said they wouldn't be offended by a Pagan blessing just as I am not offended by a well meant Christian blessing. It is the intent that matters, whether we think their god has the power they accord him or not.

By the way, the deer came back and had a few more apples, but stayed away from the garden. I almost went out again but with the camera this time to see if the female would approach.
